2021 HRC Research Development Workshops for CASS Staff

Applicant Guidelines

The HRC’s Research Development Workshops are designed to give early- and mid-career academic staff within the College of Arts and Social Sciences an opportunity to discuss their scholarly work and develop strategies for coping with the many different demands upon their time, as well as to learn some basic principles of applying for grant funding. Staff who successfully complete the program will be offered a grant of $3,000.00 to carry out a project of their own design developed in the final workshops.

Schedule

Workshop 1: Friday 20 August, 9am-12pm

Homework: bring along a copy of the document containing your research interests and project submitted in the application (we will circulate copies of each participant’s CV).

Short- and long-term perspectives on research

3-5 year research planning

Creating/interpreting your own CV

Workshop 2: Friday 17 September, 9am-12pm

Homework: record work habits to bring to the next session; write and submit a 3-5 year research plan.

Publishing: how, why, and where

Project planning

Grant writing

Workshop 3: Friday 22 October, 9am-12pm

Homework: write and submit a (short) grant application.

Funding

Successful applicants will receive a grant of $3,000.00 at the completion of the program, to be spent in the following year. The funds will be accessible via a general ledger account provided to participants upon acceptance into the program.

The funds will be held in a recurrent account and must be spent by 30 November 2022. There will be no carry forwards on these funds.

Eligibility

· For the sake of continuity and effectiveness, participants will need to be available for all three workshops in order to undertake the program and qualify for a research grant.

· Applicants must be continuing or fixed-term academic staff within the College of Arts and Social Sciences.

· Staff who have previously taken part in the workshops are not eligible to reapply.

The workshops are capped to 12 participants to ensure that it functions effectively. Unsuccessful applicants are welcome to apply in the following year.
