Conversations Across the Creek: Landscape Regeneration in Australia and Beyond

Conversations Across the Creek is an initiative by the Humanities Research Centre (HRC) and the Research School of Chemistry (RSC) to provide a space for continuing dialogue among scientists, social scientists, and humanities scholars. Meetings are held monthly, with the aim of stimulating and unearthing research and teaching collaborations across the university.

Join us for the final Conversation for 2019, where three ANU scholars present on their latest research. The topic of this event is Landscape Regeneration: In Australia and Beyond.

The current drought in Australia is unprecedented, now exceeding the millennium drought of the 2000s and the Federation drought of the 1900s, which lead to widespread ecosystem meltdown and irreversible change. This is an indicator of what is to come with conditions getting much worse for decades before they get better in the best case climate scenario. Australian agriculture is on the brink, animal stock and ground cover are at record low levels, banks are foreclosing, farmer suicides are rising. Yet there is hope. New precision tools to re-hydrate, re-mineralize and regenerate agriculture can provide resilience, food security, and healthy livelihoods. Regenerative farms are embedded in restored and enhanced ecosystems, which provide habitat, while efficiently drawing down carbon into soils to address the root cause and reverse global warming. We will outline global change solutions for farms, farmers, and finance in this interdisciplinary talk.
