The Humanities Research Centre aims to stimulate scholarship and advance research in the Humanities through the following objectives:

  1. Act as a national and international centre for excellence in the Humanities and a catalyst for innovative Humanities scholarship and research within the Australian National University.
  2. Attract leading international scholars and creative artists to Australia to interact with undergraduate and postgraduate students and academic staff within the ANU and throughout Australia through conferences, colloquia, scholarly publications, workshops, teaching programs and exchanges and collaboration.
  3. Encourage research and debate on the Humanities within Australia through collaboration with other universities, learned societies and cultural institutions.
  4. Act as an advocate for the Humanities in the academic sphere and wider community, nationally and internationally.
  5. Provide a stimulating and congenial environment for research and interdisciplinary projects and cross University interactions at ANU.
  6. Foster excellence and innovation in teaching in the Humanities.


The HRC seeks to achieve these objectives by:

  • Collaboration with tertiary and cultural institutions, nationally and internationally.
  • Participating in contemporary debates within a diverse range of Humanities scholarship
  • Funding ANU academics to convene conferences, participate in interdisciplinary research projects and develop their personal research.
  • Short term Fellowships.
  • Long term ARC and externally funded Fellowships.
  • Visitors program of national and international scholars.
  • Conferences, colloquia, work in progress seminars and summer schools at the HRC and throughout Australia.
  • A publication program and collaboration with publishing houses.
  • Distinguished lecture series.
  • Supporting programs for excellence in graduate and undergraduate teaching in the Humanities in conjunction with ANU Faculty staff and HRC Visiting Fellows.
  • Nurturing and acting as a catalyst for Centres and new research initiatives at the ANU.
