All in good faith? The meaning and value of speaking from the heart in public debate

Dr Kim Huynh has written for ABC Religion and Ethics on what it looks and sounds like to speak from the heart.
"In essence, speaking from the heart involves communicating in good faith with the intent of connecting with others. Being in good faith incorporates not only honesty, but also a commitment to suspend one’s prejudices and agendas in order to better understand the people with whom we’re having a chinwag. It regards solemn self-reflection as a precursor for conversation.
Sometimes no meaningful connection is possible. However, these instances are rare exceptions rather than the norm. Indeed, speaking from the heart is a natural instinct that has been made abnormal. It is a noble disposition that is continually suppressed."
