The Value of the Humanities in a Neoliberal Environment Workshop // 1 Nov

The Humanities Research Centre presents an informal, discussion-based workshop exploring the impact of neoliberal language and values on the humanities. Dr Hannah August will lead the discussion.  She will present observations from her current research into the state of the humanities in New Zealand, and the ways in which the dominance of a neoliberal values framework and its attendant language has profoundly affected public understanding of the worth and purpose of a university education.  She will use this case study to prompt broader debate about transnational trends and local particularities.

Hannah August is a writer, editor and researcher based in Wellington. She has written for publications such as the Times Literary Supplement and Metro. She has a PhD from King's College London and has been a Commonwealth Scholar, a Fellow of the New Zealand Federation of Graduate Women, and was last year's recipient of CLNZ/NZSA Stout Centre Research Grant.
